Newton XC Teams in Coaches Pre-season Poll
The NHS boys and girls cross country teams have been ranked in the Kansas Coaches pre-season rankings.
The boys team was ranked 7th in class 5A. Others ranked in 5A are: 1. Bishop Carroll, 2. St. Thomas-Aquinas, 3. Hutchinson, 4. McPherson, 5. Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 6. Liberal, and 8. Mill Valley / Emporia.
The girls are ranked 4th along with Lansing in 5A. Others ranked are: 1. St. Thomas-Aquinas / Bishop Carroll, 3. Gardner-Edgerton, 4. Newton / Lansing, 6. Kapaun Mt. Carmel / Great Bend, 8. Hutchinson.

2010 Manhattan Invitational XC Meet
The Railer cross country team travels to Manhattan Warner Park this Saturday to start the 2010 season. The "Congo Trail" course is a challenge to start the season due to the combinations of short hills, and long, steady incline hills. It is a good gauge to determine the runners conditioning. The NHS Girls placed 2nd and the Boys 8th at this meet in 2009.
The running schedule is as follows:
- 9:00am - B Boys (5K)
- 9:30am - B Girls (4K)
- 10:00am - A Boys (5K)
- 10:30am - A Girls (4K)
- 11:00am - C Boys (4K)
Parking is available in Warner Park for a $5.00 per car fee. There is limited parking on the streets outside of the park, but plan to get there early if you want to find a spot - and plan on walking a while!
Teams competing are: Emporia, Highland Park, Junction City, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Manhattan, Newton, Topeka Seaman, Shawnee Heights, Topeka High, Topeka West, Washburn Rural, Salina Central, St. John's Military Academy.

2010 Sand Creek 2-Mile Results
The 2010 Sand Creek 2-Mile Walk-Jog-run was held this past Saturday. The weather was terrific, and there was great participation from runners, cross country families, NHS alumni, and the Newton Community. Thanks to all the sponsors and supporters who helped make this annual event happen.
The overall race and men's division was won by Aaron Terril Yoder in a time of 9:50. The women's division was won by Becky Eby in a time of 12:57.

Ron Capps named to NHS Hall of Fame
Former Newton High School cross country and track coach Ron Capps has been named to the NHS Hall of Fame. He will be honored along with the other inductees this fall.From the Newton Kansan -"Capps spent 21 years as the Railer cross country coach and 11 years as the girls’ track coach. He coached cross country from 1975 to 1995, winning three AVL girls’ titles and three AVL boys’ titles. His girls’ teams were second in the AVL five other times while the boys took second twice. His girls’ teams finished fifth at state three times while the boys’ teams finished third at state twice and fourth three other times. As girls’ track coach, his team won the AVL in 1978 and finished second three other times. His teams had a second-place regional finish and two third-place finishes. His teams finished sixth at state in 1980 and seventh in 1976 and 1978. Capps also coached freshman and sophomore football, as well as intramural football and basketball, coaching a total of almost 2,000 athletes. He also worked more than 2,000 sporting events in basketball, football, swimming, track, baseball, softball, wrestling and soccer, serving as a timer, announcer, starter, clerk and crowd supervision."
